Not so long ago, most people ate from the ground they stood on.

My grandparents' generation grew what they ate and ate what they grew. Vegetables came from an intensive plot beside the house - no fertilizer, no pesticides, just night soil and succession planting to keep the soil from wearing out. Ducks and fish lived alongside the crops, clearing pests and weeds while fertilizing them. Something was always coming ready, season by season, the calendar deciding the plate.

Soups were made daily to balance cold and heat in the body. A cough was met with ginger tea before it was ever met with a pill. Food was a daily essential, and it was also the first medicine when the body needed one: 药食同源 (yào shí tóng yuán). This core principle of Chinese food therapy, also known as 食疗 (shí liáo), that food and medicine come from the same source, is one of the oldest ideas in Chinese medicine and still underlies how food is used therapeutically today.

 

The thing I couldn't un-notice

We live far longer than our great-grandparents did. Global life expectancy has more than doubled since 1900, from about 32 years at the start of the century to 73 by 2023. Clean water, vaccines, and antibiotics were miracles. Too many children used to die of infections a simple treatment now prevents. There's no version of the past worth trading this progress for.

But the people getting sick were getting younger.

Cancer has long been considered a disease of age. That's changing: adults under 50 are a fast-rising age group being diagnosed with more than a dozen forms of cancer worldwide, climbing 1–2% a year. Someone born in the 1990s confronts several times the early-onset colorectal cancer risk of someone born in the 1950s.

While not every cancer type is rising, researchers are untangling how much each factor matters, and the pattern is becoming more apparent: how we live now - diet, exposure, how fast our bodies seem to age - is showing up in our health earlier than it used to.

We added years to life, but the way we live now is taking health from those years; chronic disease is showing up earlier than it did a generation ago.

 

At least part of the answer is food

As diets shifted worldwide toward cheap, shelf-stable, ultra-processed products, large studies began linking that shift to worse health outcomes: a UK study of nearly 200,000 adults tied higher ultra-processed intake to a greater overall cancer burden.

While these are associations, diet is a leading suspect. We've spent a century replacing whole foods with industrial formulations, and our bodies are registering the difference.

 

The part that surprised me most: fortification

A hundred years ago, food fortification was a genuine triumph: iodine in salt, vitamin D in milk, B vitamins and folic acid in flour all but erased goiter, rickets, pellagra, and beriberi. It still saves lives today - mandating folic acid in flour dramatically cut spina bifida cases in the populations that needed it.

Fortification was one of public health's great wins, but it was built for a specific problem in a specific era: widespread deficiency.

We don't live in that world anymore. A single day might include fortified cereal, fortified bread, a fortified snack bar, and a multivitamin. The same synthetic nutrient, added again and again, to people who were never short on it.

Fortification isn't poisoning anyone. It's a hundred-year-old fix still running on autopilot, aimed at a problem most of us no longer face. We closed the deficiency gap and kept adding anyway. What happens when a body made to get nutrients from food gets them synthetic, and in triplicate, instead? 

 

What food knows that a label doesn't

Here's the idea at the center of everything we're building.

In nature, a nutrient never arrives alone.

  • Vitamin C in fruit comes wrapped in the polyphenols and cofactors that travel with it;
  • Folate in leafy greens arrives in its active, methylated form, ready for the body to use directly without metabolic delay. 

This whole-food matrix - the fiber, enzymes, and trace compounds, some still unnamed - helps the body recognize, absorb, and use nutrients in ways an isolated synthetic version can't completely replicate. While not every nutrient behaves this way, the pattern holds often enough to matter: food isn't just a carrier for nutrients; the context is part of the medicine.

Chinese food therapy has understood this for centuries. The Tang dynasty physician Sun Simiao (孙思邈) taught that a good doctor treats illness with food first, reaching for medicine only when food has failed. The kitchen came before the pharmacy: 

  • Black sesame tonifies the liver and kidney and nourishes the hair - with more calcium per gram than cow's milk, plus antioxidant lignans;
  • Walnut tonifies the kidney and nourishes the brain - the richest nut source of plant-based omega-3 (ALA), plus polyphenols and vitamin E.

These were not supplements; they were a complete system to understand food by its nature, taste, and the organs it nourishes. In a way, 药食同源 (yào shí tóng yuán) is the oldest form of the food matrix.

In Chinese medicine, no single ingredient works alone. A true formula is built through the deliberate combination of ingredients, so they amplify, temper, and guide one another. The whole becomes something none of the parts could be alone. Two thousand years before anyone coined the phrase "food matrix," this tradition had already named the truth at its center: it's the relationship between ingredients, not any one in isolation, that heals.

 

What Omniseed is

Omniseed (千籽佐) is a small, specific answer to a large question.

We're building whole-food-led nutrition rooted in Chinese food therapy: nutrients delivered the way food delivers them, using ingredients foundational to generations of home kitchens and traditional formulas.

That's where we are going: working with a Traditional Chinese Medicine physician to bring a considered formula into the shakes themselves, with whole-food ingredients and time-honored botanicals, combined the way the tradition intended, so the whole nourishes in a way the parts never could alone. 

Real foods, whole nutrients, delivered in the context they were meant to be eaten in, built for the over-processed, under-nourished era we're all living in now.
